Modem Monitor is a program for monitoring a status and performance of the remote(or local) modem or any network interface. Modem Monitor is a unique in industry program, which allows to monitor not only per-connection statistics. It allows to monitor physical modems separately! The program is intended for using in networks, connected to Internet through phone line(modem), cable modem, satellite card or any other. Allows on workstations in the network to receive the information about status and performance of the interface connection, located on other machine.

Client-server distributed architecture is designed into the software. Server components are installed on the machine with dial up Networking, clients component(s) - on machines of the users of a local network. Server is implemented as tray application.

If you are working in network with modem internet(or internetwork) connection, and you feel shortage in modem or other device monitoring. If you work on the computer to which the modem is connected - no problems. You can find a lot of software for monitoring the LOCAL modem or network interface. But if you work on one computer, and the modem is connected to another? In the opposite end of a room? On the other floor? How to be then?

Before you begin using Modem Monitor, please familiarize yourself with the program structure and principles of operation. This knowledge will allow you to set up and change program settings more efficiently. Typical small network with dial up Internet connection look like this picture.

Some client computers connected to network and server with Remote Access Service, which establish Internet connection. On workstations you should install the client component of the Modem Monitor , on server(with modem) you should install server component.

The client component sends requests to the server using your unique ID. Server component receive request and gather data for client in RAS subsystem on local computer with modem. When data collection complete, server component send data to client, using ID. Client receive data and pass to display sub component. In result, user can monitor remote modem status and performance.

You can use the Modem Monitor in two modes of monitoring - Dial Up mode or NIC (Network Interface Card) mode:

  • Dial Up monitoring mode - allows you to choose for monitoring the separate device through which you are connected to the ISP(Internet Service Provider) using Dial up Networking technology. This device can be the regular modem, ISDN modem, cellular analog or digital modem or other similar device. The advantage of this monitoring mode consists that you can receive statistics for the concrete hardware device, instead of connections. This unique feature is accessible only in HSLAB Modem Monitor!
  • NIC (Network Interface Card) mode - allows you to choose for monitoring the separate network interface (or group of interfaces). This device can be the usual network card, the cable modem, USB networking(such as radio Ethernet or other wireless devices) device, or other similar device, including virtual network interfaces. Feature of this monitoring mode consists that you can receive statistics for the concrete network interface or group of interfaces. In case of monitoring group of interfaces of their link speed and data transfers are summarized.

Modem Monitor allows you:
  • receive connection's statistics as for the separate modem or a network card, and for all network devices together;
  • view remote modem connection status ("Connected", "Disconnected", etc) in textual, sound and graphical representation;
  • view remote modem connection speed;
  • view remote modem name;
  • view remote modem connection performance (inbound, outbound, total speed and averages);
  • start up to eight custom programs on event based rules (events are two - when modem is connected and when disconnected);
  • terminate programs, which you start after modem was connected when connection will dropped;
  • terminate programs, which you start after modem was disconnected when connection will restored.

Program's client part after starting was stay in tray and display modem status. For configuring program or view extended information(such as graphical data visualization) use mouse right click on program icon. Program's options window allow you easy and intuitively configure client part of the program.

Client Component:
Microsoft® Windows™ 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP and higher. Local area network to server where modem is installed, TCP/IP is required.
Server Component:
Microsoft® Windows™ NT(Server or Workstation) / 2000 (Professional or Server Family). Local area network (or dial up connection) to Internet, TCP/IP is required. Microsoft Dial Up network(DUN) is required. Windows XP supported only in NIC mode.
Operative memory:
Corresponds to the requirements for Microsoft® Windows™ systems.
Disk space:
2 Mbytes for the program and minimum of 3 Mbytes for installation.
Screen resolution 640 x 480 (with any color depth), 1024 x 768 x 16-bit color recommended.
